The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service advises that due to storm damage, Cascades Camping Ground located 35 kilometres east of Cooma and the Wadbilliga Road in the Wadbilliga National Park will remain closed during the Christmas holiday period.

NPWS Far South Coast Regional Manager Tim Shepherd says many trees in the Cascades Camping area remain unsafe so Cascades must remain closed to the public.

“In September NPWS informed the public we would assess trees damaged by storms near Cascades Camping Ground and unfortunately we have found the damage to the area is severe.

“NPWS won’t be able to reopen the campground before Christmas but the Cascades walkway, viewing platform, car park and walking trail to the Tuross Fall will remain open.

“Alternative camping is available to the north of Cascades at Berlang or Bendethera in Deua National Park.

“The Wadbilliga Road will also remain closed over the Christmas period due to major land slip damage, however, the Wadbilliga Road eastern closure point will be moved to Wadbilliga crossing.

“This means Wadbilliga Road will be completely closed from the western boundary of Wadbilliga National Park at Two River Plains to the Wadbilliga Crossing camping and picnic area.

“This change will allow public access to Lake Creek and the Wadbilliga Crossing camping and picnic areas from the eastern or Cobargo end of the Wadbilliga Road.

“We advise that only four-wheel drive vehicles may access Lake Creek and Wadbilliga Crossing from the east due to storm damage.

“NPWS will erect signposts advising Wadbilliga Road access near Cobargo on the Yowrie Road and Tuross Road junctions.

“Signage about the Cascades Camping Area closure will be erected at the Badja Road access point for the convenience of visitors,” Mr Shepherd said.
